Women's 1st team photo

As we reach the mid-point in the academic year it is a good time to reflect on the season so far. With over 140 games played across the club we are well over half way through the season. All teams have had an exciting, and for some, challenging semester of matches but all teams look to improve their performance in the second half of the season. This semester has seen some great improvements with the club on and off the pitch with a preseason trip for the Men’s and Women’s 1stteam to Terrassa in Spain, a preseason schools/clubs tournament at the University. We have created a new position working alongside the Executive Committee as Sponsorship and Partnership Manager which will hopefully allow us to develop those areas.

Performance

Preseason Trip

1stteams attended a 4-day preseason training camp in Barcelona, matches were played against Terrassa and FC Barcelona alongside some training sessions which allowed both teams to start the season well. We had several freshers take part in the trip as well to help with integration into the club.

Incoming student, Emily Dark, has been selected for the GB Elite Development Programme which saw her selected for a trip to China to play against Australia, Germany and hosts China as well as winning Scotland U18 and U21 player of the year.

Participation: Trips, Events and Recreational sport

This year saw us enter a Women’s 6XI for the 1sttime into BUCS and has allowed the club to expand and give further opportunities for players to play at any level.

The club will be running mixed hockey in the 2ndsemester to give further opportunity to members of the Hockey Club and the rest of the University the opportunity to take part in a fun, more relaxed hockey tournament.

Both the men's and women's tour representatives have been working hard to plan tours to take place in the coming year, which have seen lots of interest and look to be great success.

Community Engagement and Charity Work

The Club has continued its stellar work within the community and has increased participation in Hockey within the Saturday morning programme to 80 from ages 6 through to 15. We have also been delivering hockey in partnership with Madras College on a Thursday evening to enable 50+ students to take part in organised sport out with school time, these vary from S1 to S6. The club will also be hosting a Primary School Festival for schools within the North East Fife clusters in March.

The club has seen over 40 different people volunteering their time to expanding the ability for the community engagement programmes.

With 3 volunteers having been out to South Africa the next cohort of International Volunteers have been selected for the 2019 trip to Stellenbosch. George Paterson and Catherine Boyd are very much looking forward to their trip and the fundraising and organisation for what we hope will be a great trip has started already.

Alumni

The Hockey Club will be running our Alumni engagement event of Hockey Ball for all current students and alumni in March prior to the Easter holidays. This event will be run at the Old Course Hotel in March with the traditional matches against the Alumni to take place the following day, should the weather allow.

Development

This year has seen a change in scope for the coaching qualifications that will allow our students to take part in smaller, bespoke courses which will be more relevant for the individuals taking part. Thanks to Jack Williamson and his relentless effort to get more umpires badged throughout the season. Umpiring is vital to the club and we have had 4 umpires get badged this year so far.

Governance

The club governance system has continued to improve to allow the annual recruitment and training of each committee member to become smoother and for the club to continue to improve on and off the pitch.

The club has renewed its Scottish Hockey Accreditation and will be working with our Scottish Hockey Regional Development manager to potentially improve on the current silver Accreditation that the club has.

The club appointed a new Sponsorship and Partnership Manager to help create new material and work within the club to develop our current sponsorship opportunities. We will be promoting the opportunities to get involved with the club in the next few months with the hope that we will get some interested partners.
